Seattle Police Department

An Officer's Day

This project involved research, day-to-day observations and in-depth interviews to produce a presentation on the lives, perspectives and perceptions of Seattle Police Department officers. The presentation combined present day stories, historical accounts and little-known facts and served as a launching point for dialogue between police officers and community groups.

Detective Scott Kawahara was out with his wife on his day off and ran into a man who looked familiar. He quickly tried to recall, "Did I arrest this person? Is he a threat? Can I get to my gun?" Scott had one advantage. He was out of uniform and, to the other man, would appear out of context.

Scott remembered that he had arrested the man and asked, "Didn't we go to high school together? Did you play baseball? Maybe you knew my brother?"

When Scott's wife heard the words "high school," she knew to separate herself from Scott and move away.
